When playing in windowed mode the games colors are distorted. All the textures are dulled, for lack of a better word.

I think this would be a great thing to fix, just thought I'd share (perhaps someone out there can accomplish this without too much trouble).

Hi, are you sure the line in your shortcut is something like "C:\DiabloII\Diablo II.exe" -w ?

this worked for me, hope to work for you to.

There are a lot of us that start Diablo in window mode without any issues. Definetly, it's an issue on your side. Did you perhaps enabled the 256 bit colors in the launcher properties?

You may also run D2VidTst.exe which can be found inside your Diablo II folder and change it to 2D instead of 3D. Let us know with the result.

I did not enable 256 colors, and I have also rerun D2VidTst.exe and set it to 2d. I am uploading a picture which shows the difference. The top screen is from D2 fullscreen and the bottom picture is from the D2 as run by the loader.

This picture is taken from the D2 credits.

The difference is more prominent in game. Please check this in your own games. Run D2 in full screen and look at your inventory paying special attention to the colors, and then look at your inventory in windowed mode. Another example of the color distortion which comes to mind is the text for unallocated stat points which you will notice to be pink. If you recall this text was always red (unless you have never played D2 in fullscreen).

I thought you were reffering about messed up colours like you would see them in 16 bit.

Naa. Plus 16 bit color would be just fine for d2, it means there are 2^16 (65,536) colors possible to display.

Here is an interesting quote about direct color taken from wikipedia "As the number of bits increases, the number of possible colors becomes impractically large for a color map. So in higher color depths, the color value typically directly encodes relative brightnesses of red, green, and blue to specify a color in the RGB color model. Other color spaces can also be used."

For now I am using full screen mode and it is working great :)
