I feel like i got duped...
I built this sword, and without i equipped i have 5-17849 lightning damage. Once i equip it with a whopping 27% increased lightning skill damage, i'm now at 18773 lightning damage...

Can someone explain this to me please. Is this faceted sword better than a crescent moon? I thought it'd be a huge power spike to at least 21k from 18k prior to equipping it.

If im not mistaken it doesnt add to your overall weapon dmg, but to your base dmg without synergies.
Also if its equipped on a sorc it only adds to lightning mastery dmg.

When casting: Base damage = [skill damage x synergy factor]*[mastery + facets %]
When striking: Total damage = [skill damage x synergy factor]x[mastery + facets %] at time of casting x[mastery + facets%] at time of striking

I'd go with Crescent Moon, as long as you meet 117+ FCR and @ enough to kill fast without having to heal too often.
The "-% to enemy lightning resistance" thingie is extremely useful, as long as you have infinity on your merc. Not 100% sure about game mechanics, but as far as Sting info available, infi breaks light immunity for 95% of mobs, and from there on the "-% to enemy lightning resistance" total from your gear (35% from Crescent Moon + whatever else you have) is deducted from the mobs light res, making them easier to kill.
Tbh, I've never done actual testing, but you seem the kind of guy who'd go through field testing of theories. If you do that, please come back and drop some conclusions. Don't forget to do the testing on the same type of mobs (hell light immune council members come to mind right now) - regular gear vs. Crescent Moon and other similar items.

Facets damage % from 5% to 30% is coming up to max 1k dmg but if you put 1+all skill item it gives you +2k dmg lighting damage and i think % facets it's weak a little but any -% enemy resistance is better than only damage, any effect is still better from -%enemy resistance so i will recommend for you to use Crescent moon, that -5%more enemy resistance what you will gain there to -35% will work better than your optional sword and there you have also magic absorb then prefer to use it for you.

WOW, so a 6facet 30/30 crystal sword is substantially inferior to the crescent moon =/
LMAO, wish i asked before i just spent like 4 Lo runes to build it hahahahahah I can't help but laugh at myself right now.
Ty for such a great answer, exactly the sort of mechanics i was confused about.

@colder also a great answer. ty
