I downloaded the program right from here but I cant get it to open up. I run in admin mode it shows game guard then goes away then nothing.

I forgot what I did a few years ago when I played here. Can anyone jog my memory please?

If you are running anti-virus, make sure the Diablo II directory is added to the exclusions list. Also it's best when you're having issues like this to provide some more info, such as your OS, if you're running anti-virus, if you're using maphack or not, etc.

Check out your firewall and antivirus!
disabling the antivirus does not suffice enough to allow the game to run. Look at the Windows Firewall when it is on, then it must also be turned off

I suspect it is the anti-virus. The firewall shouldn't cause the game to close that way. Taken from the Fix Common Errors thread:

Typically newer firewalls will auto-add the exceptions. The rare occasion we see the firewall being the issue is usually in WinXP where you get the pop-up asking you to allow or block the app, and the user clicks block. Then you will have to manually add it. But in most cases like this, especially if you're using Bitdefender, the issue is likely the anti-virus. Suggesting someone to completely disable their firewall is not something we recommend.

I was trying to turn off my antivirus but simply in vain.
I wondered what could be the problem and ultimately unfortunately had to make sure Windows Firewall did not allow Diablo 2 to run.
I do not know what settings are because I do not understand the operating system, but I know that this was my problem so I could solve it

@Deadlyiest, post a screenshot of what you see and make sure you haven't checked the `Reduced color mode` box under properties, compatibility.

You might need use Glide Wrapper mate http://www.svenswrapper.de/english , as it looks like, you launched game without that program ?
by the way, this happens usually after changing properties of game.exe settings.. if you haven't touched them so read msg above.

@Deadlyiest, go to your graphic card control panel and disable anti aliasing. Next, open your game folder, run D2VidTst.exe and select 2D. Start the game in window mode if you haven't yet.
Alternatively, you may use Glide Wrapper as @Realmate suggested.
