I assume you are installing from official CD/download?
If thats the case try download the direct play game from thepiratebay.sx (via torrent)

Diablo 2 With Lord of Destruction (v1.13c) (Direct Play) (Latest (download torrent) - TPB

Or search for "Diablo 2", order by seeders and first result.

I had a similar issue when I tried connecting for the first time and this solved it.
    ________

If this fixed the issue pls come back and report to help other people in the future with a similar problem

The error talks about version 1.12, and I see a shortcut for a 1.13c loader on your desktop. Weird.

Make sure you are using the loader required by your current running version. If you are running 1.13c, use a 1.13c one, and so forth.

If this is not the case here, I strongly advise you to download another copy of the game, some releases tend to be more bitchy than others.

You did remembered to put the loader in your game folder, right?!

    So, was the problem solved?
I got the same problem, already tried reinstalling diablo and the patch and whatever, and the error persists =/
    Any thoughts on it?

    Imagines? What's that?
I downloaded my diablo II LOD from internet, and got the patch from the site. Also updated the version to 1.13c.

pigregorio - try using d2Multi This may actually solve your problem. just be sure that you edit the .ini file to point to the correct path.

No, d2multi did not fix it.
The same error appears "Unknown Version.
D2 Loader does not recognize this version of Diablo II. This build is only designed to work with Diablo II version 1.12."
Kinda strange, but when i tried playing single player, the stash and inventory were expanded, so the patch must have worked on some way...
