I tried, admin, change comparability, Change DAP, disable anti virus, all of which did not work at all!
Then I came across the mentioned link.. Here is a synopsis of the link:

First thing to do is make sure its only you that's unable to connect to battlenet. Maybe they are performing maintenance.
-Call/IM a friend with the game and request they try logging into your realm.
-Check the "Realm Status" page at Battle-Net Status

    Second thing to check.
Have you changed any router settings recently?
-Make sure there is nothing obstructing port 4000. On most routers you shouldn't have to open this port. I know first hand, that unless you specifically changed something in your Netgear or Linksys router, it will be fine if left alone.
-Also make sure any software firewall applications aren't blocking Diablo 2 from using the internet.

If those fail then try the following as a last result.
After you do this it should clear any data that you've received from battlenet recently which may have corrupted its entry. It will not delete any of your characters. Note to be VERY careful while using regedit as you can severely mess up your system if you mess with anything else.

Spank's notes ---------> I skipped the above steps, I did the rest below, which did stop the access violation pop ups!
    go to start>>run
    type in "regedit"

    open HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    open "Software"
    find "Battle.Net"
    Rightclick on it and Delete.

Then close all tabs up again and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    open "Software"
    find "Battle.Net"
Right click on it and Delete.

    And it now works!

@silentspanky, the link you came across refers mostly to the bnet servers since they have a lot of restrictions, hence why it points you to their page to check for realm status first. PS: No external links, please.
All you had to do in this particular case was to install our custom server patch that's mandatory to create and join games on this realm, this is what you were missing and not the registry files because deleting those will require you to run the .reg file manually again. This is normally a recommended step in case one decides to reinstall the game.

Anyway, we already met in-game and you are now able to play on the realm after installing our custom server patch. Welcome aboard!
