This happens to me from time to time. I thought it may be due to a connection problem. Usually a computer restart fixes my issue. I am using Ubuntu instead of Windows for a OS, so my issue may be unrelated, but a computer restart is my suggestion.

When (and if) you're running into issues when the gameguard, when the splash-logo initially appears, if it ultimately ended up not properly launching your actual game client after a little bit of time, most people just assume you'd re-attempt in running the client launcher and re-starting the process in starting up the game, but you've gotta actually manually destroy a specific process that sustains the usage (in the backgrounds) of the firstly-attempted gameguard client you've booted up with the first time you tried in running your game client launcher, most remain unaware that crashing or closing the process of diablo 2 itself doesn't always terminate the priority or usage of your gameguard and it's a separate duty to exterminate it's lingering existence. Launching new game clients overtop a previously-existing (still running) gamegaurd stops D2.exe from even being able to launch properly so basically you're stuck getting no progress until gameguard's hidden occupance is destroyed, then everything can be ran fresh and function anew. If you cannot figure out which process specifies the usage of gameguard within your list of running processes within your Task Manager, simply using a proper restart on the pc will provide as a last resort for fixing the gameguard issue.. Keep in mind this applies to you if you're one of those seemingly very few player's that end up installing and going through hell because of a little lovely feature called "gamegaurd" like I had for a good a day or maybe second or third day..
