    What are all those bad jools good for?
    Why are people buying 40 amethysts?
    I run into these questions over and over.

    Welcome the guick and easy crafting explanation and guide
    Wocabulary:
    HC -> horadric cube
    jool -> jewel of any type
    affix -> an atribube of your item example: 20str, 2assa skill levels, 18% pos rez.
    alvl -> affix level (this determines the affix pool the item chan roll from)
    ilvl -> item level. [ill use Ilvl (big i) for the output crafted items level]
    clvl -> the character's level you use for crafting
    qlvl -> quality level of an item

    How to?
    Crafting is a method where you roll a specific item+jewel+gem+runes in your HC for a new "crafted" item
    Magic Item (specific type) + Rune (specific) + Perfect Sapphire + Jewel = Hit Power Item (of the same type)
    Magic Item (specific type) + Rune (specific) + Perfect Ruby + Jewel = Blood Item (of the same type)
    Magic Item (specific type) + Rune (specific) + Perfect Amethyst + Jewel = Caster Item (of the same type)
    Magic Item (specific type) + Rune (specific) + Perfect Emerald + Jewel = Safety Item (of the same type)

    Note that the magic item and jool you use will be destroyed in the process and only the magic item has effect on the resoult item from the used ones.

    All that is important to know:
    crafted items are created with 3 or 4 static propertys with 1 to 4 more random affixes depending on the Ilvl.
    with 71+ Ilvl you are guaranteed to get 4 affixes. this gonna be one of your main golas.
    These affixes are using the same mechanics as if the base would be a rare item. So max 3-3 perf suf, 1of a family.

    Ilvl is calculated as the average of clvl and ilvl. this is really important couse it is used in the calcualtion of alvl and the number of affixes.
    So you want specific ilvl bases and use a proper clvl character for cubeing.
    You dont have to bother with this. Calcualtions for the best chance for good resoults have been done by many ppl. Ill just forward the methods i use.

    The best ways to get items for crafting is shopping or gambling without doubt. these both use you clvl to determine the shopped/gambled items ilvl, so you can get what you want fairly easy.
    shopping: min(clvl+5, 99)
    gambling: clvl -5 +random(0 to 10)
    The methods differ depending on what item you aim for. Rings, amul, gloves etc... each of them got different qlvl and use different alvl calculating methods depending on how high the ilvl is.

    Why are crafted items preferred?
    most of them can have affixes that are unavaiable on magic/rare/uniq items in that item slot. For example KB on gloves
    Furthermore you can only roll 1 affix from a family, but if the base crafed item got static value of 10%fcr you can still roll of Apperentice (10% fcr) suffix in the 4 random ones opening in case of caster amulets, which allows more verse builds.
    Blood rings are inferior to rare ones, but you are able to mass product them not like rare rings and they can still compete

    Recipies breakdown:

    ill write the ones i usually use. if you need more just post it in a comment and ill search on net or do the math myself.

    Blood Rings:
    Recipie: ring + PRuby + sol + jool
    static bonuses:
    +1-5 To Strength
    1-3% Life Stolen Per Hit
    +10-20 To Life

    If you want to be able to roll the highest affix you need to gamble and craft with at least clvl 89 char.

    Caster Amulers
    Recipe: amulet + PAmet + ral + jool
    static bonuses:
    (5-10)% Faster Cast Rate
    Regenerate Mana (4-10)%
    + (10-20) To Mana

    The highest affix here is really important +2 to class skills which is a lvl90 one. Make sure you gamble and craft with a clvl 93+ character to let every amulet have a chance to roll it.

    Hit Power (aka KB) Gloves
    Recipe: Magic Chain Gloves/Heavy Bracers/Vambraces + Ort + Perfect Sapphire + jool
    static bonuses:
    Knockback
    5% Chance To Cast Level 4 Frost Nova When Struck
    Attacker Takes Damage of (3-7)

    These are the bowa gloves :)
    The way to go here is to use a clvl ~80 char and gamble heavy bracers or vambraces. this requires some gold obviously. if you dont have many just use a clvl78 char and shop them at nightmare charsi. with the portal method it shouldnt take too much time to get some heavy bracers.

    When you roll a circlet 2-3 times and it get iLVL50-60 simply get a new circlet from gamble or roll a iLVL99 with the SoJ recipe for rare items.

    not totally true. The affix pool gonna be determined using max(ilvl, qlvl) due to circlet class items got magic level.
    #1 to note: you want to roll diadems not circlets
    After a certain point the ilvl gonna fall bellow the qlvl so the affix pool uses qlvl+magic level in diadems case this is >90 so no matter how many times you roll it it can still roll the highest affixes like +2 skills. The only thing thats gonna fall is the number of affixes you get couse its determined only by ilvl.
    Dont worry, if you roll with a hihg clvl char ~93 the diadem wont fall bellow ilvl ~60

    Completing what @MadVisions said, actually you can reroll the diadem (ya, just find an rare diadem and reroll) even with an lv 1 character, the ilv of diadem doesnt get lower :), its different than crafting, the only thing that matters in rolls is the Ilvl.

    recipe doesnt matter as 2/20 is not part of any of them, depends if you want CB or KB on gloves - I would recommend to go for CB for java and craft blood gloves - shop Heavy or Sharkskin Gloves from NPC's and craft them - with 76-77 clvl character

    Sry to bring up a pretty old topic. I am interested in this one detail:
    I found no source on internet, how ilvl affects the number of prefixes or suffixes. AS says its 50%-50% to have or not have. Crafting guide says about crafting items only. So how ilvl affects the number of affixes on rare item? Thx

    Rare items can have up to six modifiers; 3 suffixes and 3 prefixes, or any combination thereof.
    Alvl ( Affix Level): This figure is the level of the affix. The Ilvl of an item usually is equal to the maximum possible Alvl. For example a sword dropped by an Mlvl 50 creature would have an Ilvl of 50, and the highest affixes possible on it would be Alvl 50.
    So doesnt matter what ilvl it is, it can always get up to 6 stats (3 suffix and 3 prefix or a combination of those) but the ilvl also determines what lvl of suffix or prefix can spawn shown in the link below
    http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/magic/suf.shtml

    Exception is diadem, they can roll every single mod regardless of item level.

    And does it affect rare diadem rolling? (6x skulls)

    means diadem is not affected by ilvl, even when rerolling it can roll any stats and has a chance of getting up to 6 modifiers.
