This is true, but if he's using exile for smite (really the most likely answer) then it's garbage because of the damage output of the shield.

 

Does the shield dmg rly matter? Especiallywhen ur using grief?

 

It matters quite a bit less with grief, but it does matter. Especially if you're using more of a safety build than a speed build. I however use a 2 socketed +3 skills Heaven's Light, with 2x shael runes to get the 52 IAS bp, so that my smiter can max on Crushing Blow instead of the added damage from Grief, so just as an example shield damage would matter a lot more for my build.
